Strawberry Shortcake Muddy Buddies

I have an addiction to muddy buddies. The way I figure it, people are addicted to all sorts of things that are horrible for you, not to mention culturally frowned upon and some even criminal – literally. So if I’m going to be addicted to something, it needs to be a) legal,  b) culturally acceptable, c) transportable, d) finger licking good and e) worthy of giving as a gift. And, well, Muddy Buddies fit all of the above!  🙂  Some call it puppy chow, some call it muddy buddies (that’s the trademarked name from Chex cereal) and some call it Monkey Mix.  Whatever you call it – just call it delicious – because its crunchy, its sweet (but not TOO sweet) and I’ve mastered so many different varieties of it, that it can literally be an addictive part of any activity, celebration, party or just lazy night on the couch!  This strawberry shortcake version is my absolute favorite.  I make it every year for all of my son’s teachers at school and I can’t tell you how many requests I get for the recipe. Strawberry Shortcake Muddy Buddies

Serves 40
Prep time 25 minutes
Cook time 25 minutes
Total time 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 boxes Rice Chex
  • 20oz White Candy Melt
  • 10oz Red Candy Melt
  • 10oz Pink Candy Melt
  • 1 box Strawberry Cake Mix
  • 3 1/2 cups Powdered Sugar
  • Pink/Red/White M&M Candies (optional)
  • 2 Gallon Ziploc Bag
  • Large Strainer

Directions

Step 1
Pour one box of rice chex into a very large mixing bowl. Pour 1.5 Cups of powdered sugar into ziploc bag. Melt 20 ounces of white candy melt in a microwave safe bowl for 1 minute and stir. Continue to heat in 20 second intervals until melted. DO NOT OVERHEAT. Pour candy melt over rice chex and gently stir to coat. Immediately pour coated cereal into ziploc bag, seal, and gently shake to coat. Pour out into large strainer and toss vigorously to remove all excess sugar. Set aside in large, clean bowl.
Step 2
Repeat the process outlined in step one making the following changes: Use half a box of rice chex, 10 ounces of pink melting chocolate, and 3/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup cake mix ( together in the ziploc bag).
Step 3
Repeat step 2 with the same quantities, but using red melting chocolate.
Step 4
Gently toss all 3 colors of coated chex together in a large bowl. Sprinkle with M&M's and toss until incorporated. (save unused cake mix for another batch, another day!)
